Aube: Aube / Knurl

Alien8 Recordings celebrates it’s first year anniversary with a split release between Kyoto, Japan’s Aube and Toronto, Canada’s Knurl. Each artist has turned in two tracks totalling just under seventy minutes.

Aube needs no introduction at this point. Next to Masami Akita’s Merzbow he is probably the most established artist in the field of extreme music. On this particular outing Aube has taken sounds generated from a live performance at the Takamatsu City Museum of Art, 15th of November, 1996, and recreated and remixed the material August – September last year at Studio Mecca, Kyoto, Japan. The sole sound source is telephones. The result is some incredibly dark, chilling material more on the ambient side with some occasional bursts.

Alan Bloor a.k.a. Knurl has been building a cult following over the last four years primarily through the medium of cassette releases as well as 7 inches and one CD on RRR’s Pure series. Alien8 Recordings is proud to display this Canadian’s colossal sound on CD again – finally! Knurl takes a more direct approach than Aube, assaulting the listener from the get go. Knurl harnesses a power comparable to that of Merzbow, the Haters and MSBR – yet achieves his sound quite differently. Equipment abused on this recording includes various scrap metal, Boss DS-1 distortion and GE-7 Equalizer pedals.

This split CD was designed by Akifumi Nakajima using black and silver ink. It is strictly limited to one pressing of 500 copies.
